Sheffield students’ guide to stress-free revision
Yes, you know that studying is the reason you’re here at university. Still, it might feel that you’ve barely had a chance to settle into life at Sheffield before those first semester exams appear on the horizon. And between a busy social life and attending lectures and seminars, finding time to fit revision in can feel a bit overwhelming.
Don’t worry. We’re here to reassure you that revision doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few simple techniques, you can turn study time from a panic-fest into a calm, confident routine.
Keep a dedicated study area
Are you someone who tends to study wherever they can find a spare spot - whether it’s the bed, sofa or even on the floor? Can you even find your desk underneath that pile of clothes? Studies have shown that a designated, distraction-free study zone is key to helping us focus. Make your desk a nice place to be by keeping it clean and calm - clutter can make us feel stressed and harder for our brains to process information. Position your desk near natural light and add a small houseplant or two to help create a more positive and calming work environment.
Start early
No doubt you’ll remember this from your A Levels, but the key to successful revision is to review material as soon as you have learnt it - and then revisit it regularly. Consistent reviewing of info utilises your long-term memory, and really helps to boost retention.
Here’s how to do it: After each lesson, summarise the key points in your own words - you could maybe add these to a study guide or flashcards. The next day, test yourself on the key points, then again a few days later with a different method, and again a week later. This steady cycle of reviewing keeps your brain engaged, your memory strong and reduces the need for stressful last-minute cramming.

Take regular breaks
Long periods of study can lead to extreme tiredness, a loss of focus and feelings of stress. So, be sure to take regular breaks to help boost your concentration and also avoid that feeling of being overwhelmed with information. You could even look to try The Pomodoro technique which is a popular method that aims to help increase focus and productivity. The technique involves breaking up your study sessions into 25-minute chunks (pomodoros), and then taking a five-minute break in between each. After four pomodoros, you then should reward yourself with a longer break - perhaps to make a cuppa, chat to a friend or get outside for some fresh air.
Make yourself a revision timetable
Thinking about your exams at university in Sheffield as one huge task can feel totally overwhelming. Breaking everything down into manageable chunks makes revision far less stressful. Start by listing all your exams and subjects. Then work out how many days you have left before your exams and how many hours you can (realistically) spend revising. Allocate each time slot to a specific subject. Don’t spend too long on each topic - take regular breaks and mix up your revision methods, for example, alternating between active recall, past papers and mind maps. Try using apps such as My Study Life, which help you to create timetables and to-do lists and even includes a Pomodoro timer to keep you focused.

Prioritise self care
Getting a good night’s sleep, regular exercise and eating well are all key to ensuring that your revision time at Sheffield stays as stress-free as possible. Good sleep starts with a regular bedtime and at least 30 minutes away from screens before you turn out the light. Whether you read, listen to music or even do some light yoga, giving your brain time to unwind will help you fall asleep more easily. Prioritise balanced, healthy meals over greasy takeaways, and consider a break from the beers if you can. Alcohol disrupts your sleep and, in particular, reduces REM, which is vital for memory and learning.
