How to dress your student room for Halloween
Halloween is just around the corner. But just because you’re technically an adult, it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. You are a Sheffield student after all!
So, whether you’re celebrating the season with an in-room horror movie marathon or pre-drinks before you hit Sheffield city centre, why not make the most of the spooky season and get your room suitably scarified?
Just so you know, it’s part of the house rules of true student Sheffield that you can’t stick or fix anything to the walls of your room, but don’t worry, all our ideas are non-sticky!
Pimp your pumpkin
No Halloween decor is complete without a carved pumpkin or two (or three or four). Go for a traditional jack-o’-lantern or get creative by carving the image of your family dog, favourite horror movie villain or football team. Go for battery-powered LED lights instead of real candles to stick to the rules of your tenancy. Can’t be bothered with the faff (or smell) of real pumpkins? Head to your local pound shop to find some decorative light-up ones!
Weave a wicked web
Creepy spiders are a Halloween staple, so drape fake spider webs across your sofa, doorways and windows to create the requisite spooky vibe. Don’t forget to hide some fake spiders within the webs to lie in wait for unsuspecting visitors. You can get artificial webs and spiders from Amazon or any high-street bargain shop.

Light it up
Coloured string lights are an easy way to evoke a spooky atmosphere in your room. Whether you go ghastly green, deep purple or glowing orange, they’ll help set the right vibe when draped over your headboard, bookshelf or window frame. Or, you could go cutesy with characters - a row of floating ghosts, jangling skeletons or a coven of witches will bring the smiles too.
Frighten your furnishings
A quick and easy way to Halloween-ify the look of your Sheffield student room is to simply swap a few of your soft furnishings for something more suited to the season. Head to shops such as Wilkos, H&M and Home Bargains, where you’ll find some brilliant themed items, such as bat-patterned fleece blankets, pumpkin pillows and black-cat duvet covers. Don’t forget to check out the charity shops too - they often have their very own Halloween displays, so you’ll be able to find some great seasonal bargains.

Get crafty with accessories
With a little bit of time and effort, you can create some wonderfully creepy Halloween decorations of your own. Try decorating some polystyrene skulls (you can find them on eBay) with crystals, feathers and paints to dot around your room. Or paint a Halloween design onto plain mugs with ceramic paints. Make your own bottles of potion - fill empty glass bottles with coloured water made from food dye and add witchy labels such Scale of Dragon and Toe of Frog. Or for something cute, dress up your houseplants by hanging tiny homemade ghosts from their stems. Just wrap a marble or ping pong ball in white fabric, tie at the base to form a head and floating body, draw on a spooky little face and voilà - ghostly figures to haunt your greenery!
