What better way to make memories at university than with some creative drinking games? Whether you’re pre-drinking before a night out on West Street or just having a chill night in your Sheffield student accommodation, these games will guarantee some laughs. In this blog, we’ve listed some drinking game ideas especially for Sheffield students.

1. The West Street Challenge

Inspired by the famous West Street bar crawl in Sheffield, this drinking game is ideal for pre-drinks before you head out for the real thing.

 How to play

  1. Assign each person a ‘bar’ like The Cavendish or Molly Malone’s. Make sure they have a drink mildly related to the bar, for example a Guiness for Molly Malone’s.
  2. Every ten minutes, change the ‘bar’ by switching drinks (eg. from beer to shot, cocktail, or cider)
  3. If someone sings Wonderwall, they have to take a penalty shot.

2. The Henderson's Relish Challenge

A Sheffield classic with a spicy twist that will test both your knowledge and your tolerance to heat.

How to play

  1. Each round, one person answers a Sheffield trivia question.
  2. If they get it right, they nominate someone to drink.
  3. If they get it wrong, they have to take a sip of their drink with a dash of Henderson’s Relish.
  4. Bonus rule: If someone says “It’s not Worcester sauce!” everyone drinks.

3. Ring of Fire

A legendary drinking game that every student has to play at least once. All you need is a deck of cards and a big cup in the middle.

How to play

  1. Each card has a rule (e.g., 2 = you, 3 = me, 4 = floor, 8 = mate, King = pour into the middle cup).
  2. The person who draws the last King drinks the entire middle cup (pray it’s not a horrible mix).
  3. Add Sheffield-themed rules, like “Joker” = say something cool about Sheffield or drink!

4. Freshers' Truth or Drink

Perfect for breaking the ice in freshers’ week, this game is guaranteed to bring out hilarious stories, embarrassing confessions, and unexpected secrets.

 How to play

  1. Take turns asking juicy ‘Truth or Drink’ questions.
  2. If someone refuses to answer, they take a drink.
  3. Example Sheffield-related questions: Have you ever lied about being a Sheffield United or Wednesday fan? Which local pub or chippy is totally overrated?

5. Power Hour

A challenge for the brave, and a true test of endurance and determination! This game is not for the faint-hearted.

How to play

  1. Drink a shot of beer every minute for an hour.
  2. Make a Sheffield-themed playlist, including the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Pulp.
  3. If someone sings along, drink again!

6. Lecture Roulette

For those who need a reminder of the academic grind while drinking, this game adds an educational twist to your night out (or in).

How to play

  1. Put on a random university lecture video on YouTube.
  2. Every time the lecturer says “um” or “basically,” everyone drinks.
  3. If someone falls asleep, they have to down their drink when they wake up!

7. The Sheffield Speed Round

A fast-paced game designed to test your reflexes and Sheffield knowledge under the influence!

How to play

  1. Sit in a circle and pick a category related to Sheffield (e.g., Sheffield bands, pubs, landmarks, slang).
  2. Go around the circle quickly, with each person naming something from that category.
  3. If someone hesitates for more than three seconds, repeats an answer, or gets it wrong - they drink!
  4. To make it harder, change the category every few rounds or add a rule like "no pointing" or "must answer in a Sheffield accent."

Drinking games are all about having fun but remember to drink responsibly! Know your limits and look out for your friends. And if you do end up at West Street at 3 AM belting out Oasis, well… you’re officially a Sheffield student now.
